Phénix

Screenwriter, director, producer and co-director of Sans rancœur films, Jonathan Beaulieu-Cyr has established himself over the past several years as one of the most promising voices in Quebec cinema. A regular at Off-Courts, four of his films have been selected for the festival over the years: as director with Ferraille (2015) and Pisser dehors (2017), then as co-producer with Florida-Montréal (2017), directed by Renaud Lessard and winner of the Best Quebec Short Film award at Trouville, as well as with Écume (2021), directed by Omar Elhamy. It is therefore with immense pleasure that we finally welcome Jonathan for the screening of Phénix (2025), his first solo feature film. This autobiographical film, inspired by his experience as the son of a Quebec military officer, enjoyed a major theatrical release across Quebec and won the Prix collégial du cinéma québécois (PCCQ) in 2026. Jonathan’s career is inextricably linked to the artistic collaborations he has maintained for several years with filmmakers Renaud Lessard and Omar Elhamy. With Renaud Lessard, he co-directed his debut film, *Mad Dog Labine*, which won the National Competition Prize at the Festival du nouveau cinéma and was nominated for the Canadian Screen Awards. With Omar Elhamy, he co-wrote and co-produced Écume, which was screened at the Berlinale, won awards at the Iris Awards and the Festival du nouveau cinéma, and was subsequently selected for the TIFF Top 10. Alongside these collaborations, Jonathan is developing a deeply personal body of work. With *Phénix*, he has created an intimate yet powerful drama that cements his place amongst the leading filmmakers of his generation.
